Rosaline: Biron's Equal and Better

First appears: Act 2, Scene 1

Rosaline is the woman Biron loves, and the exchange between them is the play's most electric. She matches him line for line, insult for insult. He is better at elaborate wordplay; she is better at cutting through it.

In Act 5, when the lords are exposed and submit to the ladies, Rosaline gives Biron his penance: a year visiting the sick and learning whether his wit can actually bring comfort rather than just cleverness. It is a genuinely pointed test.

She is a prototype for Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing: the woman who will not be charmed by performance alone.
