Shakespeare in Bristol
Intimate, text-led Shakespeare in the South West
Bristol's reputation for Shakespeare rests largely on Tobacco Factory Theatres in Southville — an intimate 250-seat theatre-in-the-round in a converted Edwardian cigarette factory, known nationally for stripped-back, finely acted Shakespeare where the verse does the work rather than the scenery. The venue stages a Shakespeare or classic production most years, typically in the late winter and spring, drawing on Bristol's deep pool of local acting talent.
Bristol is a genuine theatre city beyond the Tobacco Factory: the historic Bristol Old Vic (the oldest continuously working theatre in the English-speaking world) and the larger Bristol Hippodrome both programme classical and touring work, so Shakespeare and related productions appear across several venues through the year. For a visitor who wants to see Shakespeare close up in a small, atmospheric room, the Tobacco Factory is one of the best options anywhere in the country, a short way south-west of the city centre.
