Shakespeare in Manchester
Shakespeare in the round in the heart of the North West
Manchester's flagship home for Shakespeare is the Royal Exchange Theatre — the largest theatre-in-the-round in the world, a glass-and-steel auditorium suspended inside the grand Victorian hall of the city's former cotton exchange. With the audience wrapped around the stage on all sides, it is one of the best places in Britain to see Shakespeare staged with real intimacy, and the company programmes classics and Shakespeare across its year-round season alongside new writing and musicals.
The Royal Exchange is a short walk from both Manchester Victoria and Piccadilly stations, in St Ann's Square in the city centre. Beyond it, Manchester is one of England's strongest theatre cities — HOME, the Opera House and a busy touring circuit mean classical and Shakespeare-related work turns up regularly — so it is worth checking what's on across the city, not just at one venue. For visitors, the Exchange alone justifies the trip: even on a non-performance day, the building and its 90-minute guided tour are worth seeing.

Best Time to Visit
The Royal Exchange runs a year-round season, so there's no single best window — check what's on before you travel. Autumn and spring tend to carry the meatier classical and Shakespeare productions.
Getting Around
The Royal Exchange is in St Ann's Square, central Manchester — a few minutes from Manchester Victoria and around fifteen from Piccadilly. The Exchange Square and Market Street Metrolink tram stops are both a short walk. City-centre car parks are nearby; public transport is easier.
Ticket Prices
Royal Exchange tickets typically run from around £15 to £45 with under-30 and concession schemes. Popular classical productions sell well — book ahead. Check the venue's what's-on page for current shows and any day-seat releases.
