Antipholus of Syracuse: The Lost Twin
First appears: Act 1, Scene 2
Antipholus of Syracuse has spent years searching for his lost twin brother. He arrives in Ephesus alone and almost immediately becomes the centre of a cascade of mistaken identities: his twin's wife thinks he is her husband, merchants give him credit, and Adriana insists he come home for dinner.
His reaction to this strange city is different from what you might expect. He is genuinely attracted to Luciana, his twin's sister-in-law, even while she thinks he is her sister's husband. His confusion about Ephesus's apparent magic (he cannot explain what is happening) gives him a dreamlike quality.
His search for his lost twin, and the family reunion that ends the play, give the comedy its emotional backbone.
