    Royal Lyceum Theatre

The Royal Lyceum Theatre opened on 10 September 1883 with a production of Much Ado About Nothing starring Henry Irving and Ellen Terry — two of the most celebrated actors on the Victorian stage. The building, designed by C.J. Phipps (who also designed London's Savoy Theatre), has been Edinburgh's main producing theatre for over 140 years.

The Lyceum runs its own in-house productions rather than receiving touring companies. It seats 658 and stages a main-house programme that returns to Shakespeare most seasons. The RSC has visited: The Rape of Lucrece transferred to the Lyceum in 2012. In 2023, the theatre produced Macbeth (an undoing) as part of its main-stage season.

    History

The Lyceum was designed by Charles John Phipps and built in 1883 for the Howard and Wyndham theatre management company. Phipps had also designed the Savoy Theatre in London, making him one of the most sought-after theatre architects of the era.

Opening night on 10 September 1883 brought Henry Irving and Ellen Terry to Edinburgh in Much Ado About Nothing. It was one of the most celebrated opening nights of any Victorian theatre outside London — Irving was the leading actor of his generation and Ellen Terry the foremost actress.

The Royal Lyceum Theatre Company — Edinburgh's resident producing ensemble — was established in the 1960s and has operated continuously since. The company runs a main-stage season of new plays, classics, and Shakespeare, with productions made in Edinburgh rather than imported from elsewhere.

Notable Shakespeare productions in recent decades include Macbeth (an undoing) in 2023 and a visit from the RSC with The Rape of Lucrece in 2012. During the Edinburgh Festival in August, the Lyceum also programmes Festival work.
